The ESE Congress 2024 was a showcase for innovation, networking, and optimism. In a friendly yet professional atmosphere, nearly 1100 software developers from more than 400 companies and institutions gathered at the Congress Center Sindelfingen from December 2nd to 5th.
A diverse program and packed lecture halls
114 lectures and seminars offered participants a wide range of topics. Sessions on the Rust programming language and current challenges in the context of the Cyber Resilience Act were particularly popular. The Rust workshops, which covered topics such as fundamentals, practical programming, and the transition from C++ to the open-source language, caused some rooms to be bursting at the seams. In addition to these topics, presentations on C code implementation, the latest developments in the C++ standard—such as Rainer Grimm's lecture on C++26—and comprehensive insights into software architecture also attracted numerous attendees.
Broad range of topics and future-oriented atmosphere
Participants and exhibitors praised the diverse range of topics offered at the congress. In addition to fundamental subjects like implementation and architecture, areas such as safety and security, testing and quality, as well as general aspects of project management, were given ample attention. Established topics like open source and artificial intelligence also garnered significant interest, while real-time applications and security once again moved into sharp focus. The consistently positive and forward-looking atmosphere underscored the shared commitment to further development and progress within the industry.
Awards and networking
Another highlight was the Speaker Awards ceremony, which recognized outstanding contributions. Among others, Jan Altenberg was honored for his practical, top-rated seminar, "Where is the Bottleneck? Performance Analysis of Embedded Linux Systems." Beyond the lecture halls, over 40 exhibitor booths and numerous speaker meet-and-greets offered excellent opportunities for professional exchange and networking. Traditional events such as the ESE foosball tournament, the developer party, and the evening with Thomas Fröschle's show "Device Out of Control" rounded out the event in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
The ESE Congress 2024, with its innovative ideas, practical presentations and optimistic atmosphere, provided new impetus for the embedded community – a promising outlook for the coming year.
