At the same time, test coverage, status reports, and other information must be reported to test management and\/or project management on a regular basis, and in particular, a variety of metrics must be calculated to track development progress. This presentation will discuss how to manage these tasks effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief introduction to the process background, typical problems that arise are described. Requirements for a methodology and tool support are derived, and a concept and a technical solution are presented.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentally, the approach involves flexibly definable checks and tests that can be evaluated based on requirements documents, whether project-specific, cross-project, or addressing specific management issues. These checks provide statistical data and allow for the determination of appropriate metrics. The report then presents experiences gained from various projects at an OEM and an automotive supplier.<\/p>\n<h2>Content outline<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Where do we stand?<br \/>\nCurrent status of the safety measures: Which tests need to be carried out?<br \/>\nProduct maturity status: What is the test coverage?<br \/>\nCurrent status of requirements: Are the requirements formally correct?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Further questions arise in the context of function-oriented development. Here, we are dealing with numerous building owners regarding a single component&#039;s specifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can the different plans be effectively checked for minimum syntactic standards?<\/li>\n<li>How many valid requirements are there for the product or its function?<\/li>\n<li>How far have the requirements been covered so far by acceptance test specifications and implementations?<\/li>\n<li>Where are the current weaknesses? Where are there many recent changes, fixes, or insufficient test coverage...?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these questions must be answered if we don&#039;t want to develop blindly. They form the basis for a realistic assessment of capacity requirements. As a common approach to addressing these questions, a concept for evaluating specifications using flexibly definable checks is proposed.<\/p>\n<p>The checks should be easy to understand and self-explanatory, and can be specified by the requirements manager or project manager. Users and anyone who needs these results for their work should be able to apply them easily. The results should act as checks during data entry, immediately highlighting anomalies to facilitate maintenance, and should also be available for subsequent statistical analysis.<\/p>\n<p>It is also desirable that general, project-wide checks are available to every user, as well as project-specific ones \u2013 indeed, that users can even create and use their own checks for their daily work. A jack-of-all-trades? It sounds more complicated than it is. The second part of the presentation will show how such a concept can be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>A solution implemented in DOORS, which has already been extensively tested, is presented. Various checks are specified in dedicated check modules, see Figure 1 (see\u00a0<a title=\"If you build on sand, don&#039;t be surprised by the creaking! (PDF)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microconsult.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fachinfo_ese_auto_wer_auf_sand_bau__muss_sich_ueber_knirschen_nicht_wundern_itpower_solutions_wiesbrock.pdf\">PDF<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If a specific model is to be checked, the user can open a dialog via a menu item, which offers the selection of a suitable check module and the checks specified therein, see Figure 2 (see\u00a0<a title=\"If you build on sand, don&#039;t be surprised by the creaking! (PDF)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microconsult.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fachinfo_ese_auto_wer_auf_sand_bau__muss_sich_ueber_knirschen_nicht_wundern_itpower_solutions_wiesbrock.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Selected checks are then evaluated in layout columns. The user immediately sees where deficiencies still exist. Metrics can then be defined as coverage measures, with the initial set being filtered by a so-called premise check. The objects included under this filter, which are relevant for further evaluation, are determined by a second check, the acceptance check. The ratio of their counts is then the coverage measure.<\/p>\n<p>Example: Requirement for test coverage<\/p>\n<p>The premise check defines when an object is a requirement, e.g., if it is of type &quot;requirement&quot;. The acceptance check then verifies whether a linked test exists for this object. To manage numerous specifications and projects, these evaluations can also be performed in batch mode. The results are recorded in a suitable report. The concept and implementation have been tested and successfully used in numerous projects at suppliers and OEMs. The final part of the presentation will cover this.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits and special features<\/h2>\n<p>This presentation introduces a concept for syntactically checking extensive requirements, distributed across numerous specifications, for completeness and consistency. Various checks are defined locally or centrally, such as: Is the status set consistently? Are mandatory attributes filled? Does the requirement have an associated acceptance test? ... These checks can then be evaluated across any specification or project. These new checks are available as soon as new requirements or changes are entered, allowing for the early identification of gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Flexible metrics, or more precisely, coverage criteria, can then be specified using two checks: a premise check that defines the basic set, and an acceptance check that specifies the objects to be further selected within the basic set. The ratio of their numbers then defines flexible metrics that can also be calculated with fine granularity, for example, at the chapter level.<\/p>\n<p>The concept was implemented as an add-on to the requirements management tool DOORS and has been tested and continuously expanded in numerous projects at the supplier and OEM.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"If you build on sand, don&#039;t be surprised by the creaking!
