Are you more of a "natural," "true," or "proper" software developer? Just for fun, think about this question with me and consider the consequences of the answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gunter Dueck, a mathematician and lateral thinker at IBM, proposed this classification in his book "Omnisophy" (a neologism meaning something like all-encompassing wisdom). What convinces me, as a brain enthusiast, is that the characteristics of these types can be very well mapped to the abilities of our brains: intuitive thinking, analytical thinking, and the control of practical action.<\/p>\n

The "True" person primarily uses intuition and holistic thinking. The "Right" person prefers analytical thinking. The "Natural" person is ultimately driven by a passion for action.<\/p>\n

The "true" one lives for good ideas and brilliant visions that often overturn established paradigms and rules. He sees the big picture and tends to overlook details. He leaves the "right" and "natural" ones with the mess he so gleefully cooked, to clean up. They see him as a dreamer, a prophet, or a revolutionary.<\/p>\n

The "right" person prefers firm rules, clear structures, and defined processes. They vehemently advocate for software metrics, MISRA C, IEEE, CMMI, SPICE, and process models. The "true" and "natural" ones, annoyed, call them bureaucrats, pedants, or bean counters.<\/p>\n

Last but not least, the "Natural One." He loves the role of the doer or hero. When others have long since thrown in the towel in despair, he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. He squeezes every last drop of performance out of every compiler and RTOS, and his experimental drive rarely shies away from risk. Once the challenge has been brilliantly mastered, he leaves the battlefield to the others to handle the less honorable tasks like documentation. Those in the know call him, with a derogatory undertone, a "practitioner," or, less diplomatically, a hacker or software whiz.<\/p>\n

Of course, these types don't exist in their purest form, and this type of categorization is just one of many. In my experience, however, most people exhibit clear tendencies. Conflicts between the different types are inherent in the nature of things. But whatever type you are, you will need the others. Monocultures are deathly boring and deadly. Without the "right" type, there is no order; without the "true" type, there are no groundbreaking ideas; and without the "natural" type, there is no way out of project crises.<\/p>\n

Each type of person needs their own space and boundaries within the team. The opportunities of some depend on the abilities of others. Clear structures and processes free up time and financial resources that can be used for innovation. Innovation creates new challenges for organizers and doers. Doers bring ideas to life even under adverse conditions. The boundaries of the "right" approach are reached when it hinders doers and deprives visionaries of any creative freedom. The boundaries of the "truthful" approach are reached when castles in the air are built on sand, and the boundaries of the "natural" approach are reached when the sheer joy of doing leads to chaos.<\/p>\n

The consensus among these different personalities regarding a common goal is the most important foundation for project success. The realization that the optimal solution lies not in asserting individual positions, but in balancing interests, transforms a collection of personalities into a high-performing team.<\/p>\n

Especially when a project is in crisis, different personalities, worldviews, and ideologies clash because freedoms narrow and dependencies increase. These situations present a great opportunity to learn more about oneself and others. Conflicts and crises are the seeds of maturation processes for individuals and teams.<\/p>\n

0 = never, 1 = hardly ever, 2 = occasionally, 3 = very often, 4 = always<\/p>\n

The "real" one already knows what type he is and therefore quickly ticked off the test.
\nThe "natural" person enjoyed answering the questions and is curious about the result.
\nThe "right" person has racked their brains over the questions and, if the result doesn't meet their expectations, will analyze and question the question itself. Unfortunately, the questioner is a "truth-maker" for whom the idea counts more than meticulous formulation.<\/p>\n

The person who has collected the most points in category A is generally considered "correct", in category B "true", and in category C "natural".<\/p>\n
